Why can't I control how much I eat anymore?
Asked by kaminskas on Nov 19, 2008 in Weight Maintenance

After 6 months of diet success, I can't control how much I eat. I am a 6’2” tall 19 year old man. Since May 2008, I lost 50 lbs from 210 lb and to 160 lb. Now, in the last two weeks, I just can't control how much I eat. Some days, it’s ~2000 calories and other days 4000. Because of that, I put on 10 lbs in two weeks. I am pretty much in depression right now. I can't think about anything else. What is wrong with me?

Answer

You are literally starving because you have lost enough weight. You should immediately begin to eat 2600 calories a day, and if you are still hungry, bump it up to 2900 calories or reduce your workout time to one hour. Your new goal is to maintain 165 lb, which, at BMI 22, is quite low for a man. It is scary to increase your calories to maintenance level, but that is the only route to long-term weight control. Continue to keep calories counts until you feel more secure and give your weight one to six months to stabilize.
